I bring a screenshot

Yes there will be 2 doors, and the glow is just me testing a texture effect.

As you can see, I’m starting to rough out the starting area.  I’ve already imported a good number of the assets I’ll need, so things should be progressing steadily.  I’m aiming for having the level built (environment, lighting, etc) by the time I head out for GDC.  Then once I get back I’ll work on implementing the gameplay.  I’ve never done a non-FPS mod in Unreal before, but I’m confident I can figure it out.  I always do.

At least you know I’m not bored

So the update on Chapter 2 is going to have to wait a few days, since I’m currently working on a second project.  I’m going to be heading to GDC in a few weeks, and I decided that I wanted to go ahead and work on a little project in Unreal that I was originally going to do after my Left 4 Dead campaign was complete.  I’ve got a little demo level that I’ve been wanting to make for a while, and since the UDK came out, I think I finally will be able to put it together the way that I want to.  (Can I say that as much as I didn’t like to use Unreal back in the 2k4 days, I’m really liking the UDK editor?)  So that’s what I’m currently working on.  Hopefully I’ll get some screenshots up here a little later on tonight, after I’ve got all the assets imported.  (Making everything from scratch for this one, since it’s an original game idea, and not an UT mod.)  So that’s what I’ll be here working on.  At least until Dax demands that I take another break.

Level Design theory books are tasty.

She can be very insistent.  Probably gets it from the German Shepherd half.  That and her ability to open jars of mixed nuts if left alone with them for short periods of time.

Anyway… back to work now.

Chapter one complete!

Chapter one of my campaign is now complete and ready for playtesting.  I’m happy with how it looks and plays right now, and after some feedback I’m sure I’ll be making some small changes, but it feels great to have the map at this stage.  Now I’m moving on ahead to the next chapter, which will be completely indoors.  I have to say that starting with an outdoor, rural map was a little challenging.  I think I realize why there are a lot more indoor, or at least enclosed urban maps in the game itself.

I’m really enjoying telling the story of this campaign, and I think everyone will be pleased with what’s coming up in the future chapters.  I have some panic events planned that should be a lot of fun.  I’ll post a sneak peek at the next chapter in the next few days.  In the mean time, check out the screenshots, and if you’ve got any questions about the campaign, feel free to leave a comment!

Updates and falling zombies

So I’ve done a lot of updating and cleaning stuff up with my portfolio.  I’ll be posting more of my campaign up in a day or two.  The first chapter is almost done, I’m just playing around with the intro and a few other minor details.  Like the fact that the zombies really, really enjoy throwing themselves off the overpass onto the survivors… and while quite frankly I find it very funny, it doesn’t really make for challenging gameplay.  Unless of course it was possible to get killed by a falling zombie.

So I’ll be posting a preview of the next chapter up here soon.  The survivors will be moving on up from the woods to inside the estate… but they shouldn’t get too comfortable.

Gotta start somewhere

Well, this isn’t really the start, as I’ve been working on this for a bit now, but it is the first level of my custom campaign.  It’s actually in a playable state right now, there’s just some parts of it that don’t look too pretty yet.  I’ll grab some screens and video after I fix a few things up and post it up here for you to see.

The starting level of the campaign takes place in the woods off of a road, and eventually leads the survivors towards the grounds of a large estate.  The geography of the whole campaign is based off of the area where I grew up.  (Outside of Pittsburgh, in an area that had an abundance of hills, woods, and very large, very old, farms.)

So that’s a little intro to what I’m currently working on.  Stay tuned for much more to come!
